Important Distinction
Coaching vs. Medical Care
Understanding the difference is essential before you enroll.
What a Wellness Coach Can — and Cannot — Do
A Wellness Coach Can
- Provide wellness education and evidence-informed information
- Help you set and track personal health and lifestyle goals
- Offer accountability and motivational support
- Discuss general nutrition principles and healthy eating habits
- Explain publicly available research on wellness topics
- Help you develop sustainable daily habits
- Discuss general information about lab panels and what biomarkers measure
- Refer you to appropriate licensed professionals when needed
- Support your overall wellness journey as a knowledgeable guide
- Provide educational content about lifestyle factors affecting health
A Wellness Coach Cannot
- Diagnose any medical condition or disease
- Prescribe or recommend specific medications or dosages
- Interpret your personal clinical laboratory results as a medical professional
- Provide medical treatment of any kind
- Replace the care of a licensed physician, nurse practitioner, or other provider
- Order laboratory tests on your behalf (tests are ordered by licensed professionals)
- Provide clinical advice about compounded medications or peptides
- Make decisions about your medical care
- Provide emergency medical guidance
- Override or contradict advice from your licensed healthcare provider
What Licensed Healthcare Professionals Do
These roles require licensure, clinical training, and legal authority that wellness coaches do not hold.
Physician (MD/DO)
Diagnoses conditions, prescribes medications, orders and interprets lab tests, provides medical treatment.
Nurse Practitioner (NP)
Diagnoses and treats conditions, prescribes medications, orders labs — scope varies by state.
Pharmacist (PharmD)
Dispenses medications, reviews drug interactions, counsels on medication use.
Registered Dietitian (RD)
Provides medical nutrition therapy, manages diet-related conditions, creates clinical nutrition plans.
Clinical Lab Professional
Performs and interprets laboratory tests under physician orders.
Real-World Scenarios
Common questions — and who is best positioned to help with each one.
"I want to understand what my cholesterol numbers mean."
Wellness Coach
A wellness coach can explain what cholesterol markers are, what reference ranges generally indicate, and lifestyle factors that influence cholesterol levels.
Medical Professional
A physician or NP interprets your specific results in the context of your full medical history and determines whether treatment is needed.
Guidance: Both — education from a coach, clinical interpretation from your doctor.
"I want to lose weight and build better habits."
Wellness Coach
This is core wellness coaching territory. A coach can help you set realistic goals, develop sustainable habits, and stay accountable.
Medical Professional
If weight is related to a medical condition (thyroid disorder, metabolic disease, etc.), a physician should be involved.
Guidance: Primarily coaching — with medical oversight if a condition is involved.
"I'm interested in peptide therapies."
Wellness Coach
A wellness coach can provide educational information about peptide science, published research, and general mechanisms. No clinical recommendations.
Medical Professional
Prescribing, dosing, and administering peptide therapies requires a licensed prescriber. Compounded medications require a licensed pharmacy.
Guidance: Education from a coach — clinical decisions require a licensed provider.
"I want to order a lab panel."
Wellness Coach
A wellness coach can explain what different panels measure and help you understand your wellness goals. They cannot order labs.
Medical Professional
Lab panels must be ordered by a licensed healthcare provider. Results are interpreted clinically by that provider.
Guidance: Medical — lab ordering and clinical interpretation require a licensed professional.
Medical Emergencies
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately. BioCoachCJ is not equipped to handle medical emergencies and does not provide emergency medical guidance of any kind.
